An extraordinary scene of a little French girl accidently wounded by a stray shot. She rests on an ancient knights tomb, draped in a French military uniform while the battle rages through the window.
The Artist:
A child prodigy in art, John Everett Millais entered the Royal Academy Schools at age 11, and exhibited at the RA from age 17. He painted in the mannerist and realistic style . Beginning in the 1870's he created many portraits of British personalities. He paid strict attention to detail, composition and clarity. He became President of the Academy in 1896 the year of his death.
