Countess Anna Ivanovna Tolstaya née Princess Bariatinsky (1774 Ru-1825 Fr). Daughter of Prince Ivan Sergeevich Bariatinsky and Katharina von Holstein-Beck. Wife of Count Nikolay Alexandrovich Tolstoy. Sister of Ivan Ivanowitch Prince Bariatinsky (Art Page 123). Listed as "Countess Tolstoy, leaning against a rock, near a cascade." Countess Tolstoy is also mentioned in Vigée Le Brun's Memoirs as "Beautiful and good, the friend of the Countess Golovine". View another image of this portrait. This portrait was displayed in the 2015 Paris Exhibition.

The text from the auction catalog reads:"Portrait of a young musician, oil on canvas (lining; small restorations), Signed middle left, 'Md Le Brun 1777' H. 92 - L. 73 cm the reverse on the chassis label: "Collection of Baron Arthur de Rothschild with number handwritten in ink 64. Wax seal with the arms of Baron Rothschild. Provenance: Collection of Baron James de Rothschild, Paris, Galliera, Study & Laurentin Rheims, Robert Lebel expert, 1 December 1966, No. 132 (reproduced). In her diary entry for 1777, Elisabeth Vigee Le Brun mentions portraits of six married women and also lists two portraits of an unmarried girl named Dartois."
