Anna Stroganova - 1795-1801
oil on canvas, 35 1/2" x 29 in (90.5 x 73 cm)
Hermitage
Baronne Anna Sergeyevna Stroganova (1765-1824), née Trubetskaya with her son, was the wife of Grigori Aleksandrovich Stroganov; she is portrayed with her son Sergei Grigorievich, 2nd Count Stroganov (1794-1882). On the surface of the canvas a square, enclosing the heads of the mother and child, is distinctly visible. Outside the square the painting is also by the artist's hand, as confirmed by the similar manner, paint analysis and radiography. Evidently the picture was conceived of a square in format, featuring only shoulder-length representations; later the painting was enlarged almost threefold and the format was changed to a vertical rectangle by relining the original version onto a new canvas. The mother was represented in three quarter length and the child in full length. You can see the original square small format painting more clearly in this photo taken at the Hermitage in Oct 2013. This portrait was displayed in the 2015 Paris Exhibition.
