Head of a Young Woman (Lady Hamilton) - 1790

A note in French on the reverse side states the Mme. Le Brun made this drawing on a door in the summer house (Casino) of Sir William Hamilton, British minister to Naples, by whose order it was preserved.
" I sketched two small heads in charcoal upon one of these doors" vigee Le Brun . The sketches are believed to be of Lady Hamilton.

Louis Charles, the younger son of Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, was born at Versailles on 27 March 1785. He became the Dauphin upon the death of his older brother on 4 June 1789. Following his father's execution on 21 january 1793 he was proclaimed King Louis XVII by the Royalists. He never ruled and is said to have died in prison in Paris on 8 June 1795.
