Countess Valois de Valmar - 1780
oil on canvas, 29-1/2 x 23- 1/2 in, 74.5 x 60 cm
Portrait of Jeanne de Valois, Comtesse de La Motte (née Mlle de Saint-Rémy), mistress to Cardinal Louis René Édouard de Rohan. Her brother Saint-Rémy and herself were recognised by the King and the Queen, and given the name and title of "Valois," from the [extinct?] line of baron de Valois, a bastard of Henri II. La Motte and Cardinal de Rohan were behind the Necklace Affair that embarrassed Marie Antoinette in 1785, so VLB may have intentionally left the sitter off her list of paintings. Additional information on the sitter. View the June 2017 Sotheby's Paris portrait information.
